Equipping Young Volunteers: Training Course on how to manage YiA projects from inception to post-evaluation

During the Easter holidays, 26 young people from different European countries attended a training course funded by the Youth in Action (YiA) programme of the European Union. The training course was held in Rijswijk in the Netherlands and lasted one week. Participating countries included United Kingdom, Spain, Austria, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, Malta, Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic.

SPYS.int is many projects within a project, by and for young people who are interested in having a voluntary experience abroad offering young people the opportunity to make a difference through its voluntary network based in different parts of the world.

SPYS.int has already sent a good number of young people overseas on different projects over the past few years of existence. The projects available vary from group to individual experiences, from child care to IT support, from Asia to Europe and Africa.

Mumbai Visits SPYS


On Saturday 17th January Fr Savio Silveira SDB and Vice Provincial of the Mumbai Province, Fr Godfrey D’Souza SDB spent a day in Malta discussing the future, volunteering cooperation between the Salesian Pastoral Youth Service (SPYS) and the province.
In 2008, four volunteers – Lara, Marie Claire, Abigail and Anthea – where sent on projects in the province of Mumbai through SPYS.int, the international wing of SPYS, and the good impression these volunteers left, encouraged the province to seek further cooperation with SPYS

Touching Lives Through Sports – March 2009

In the weekend between Friday 20th and Sunday 22nd March, SPYS (Salesian Pastoral Youth Service) organized a residential seminar at Savio College, Dingli. The name of the seminar was ‘Touching Lives Through Sports’, with the main aim being to teach young adults how to educate and develop children’s creativity and physical education by means, and with the help, of sports.

Sunday the 15th of March was a perfect bright day for the Salesian Pastoral Youth Service’s (SPYS) monthly outreach session organised by SPYS & Friends. This month’s activity named SPYS & Friends 'Walkabout' brought fifty youths together and consisted of a walk around Dingli where the youth got a chance to mingle socially. After the walk, everyone got together for some fun activities and games at Savio College. The afternoon ended off in a traditional SPYS reflection moment and spent some quiet time reflecting in the chapel.

DBYN Meeting

From the 12 – 15 March, two volunteers from the Salesian Pastoral Youth Service (SPYS) attended the General Executive Meeting of the Don Bosco Youth Net (DBYN), in Bollington limits of Manchester in the UK, where representatives from 12 different countries came together. During this yearly meeting a number of issues and topics were discussed including the setting up of new activities, the DBYN master plan for 2009-2011 as well as the financial challenges that the network is facing.

Team Up To Lead!

The Team Up To Lead! seminar was held on 13 - 15 February 2009, for Salesian Animators and Helpers working within the vocational promotion section of Savio College, Dingli. This seminar was led by SPYS as part of the formation process for this group.
This weekend was a challenge for all those who attended to improve their leadership skills, within the group of Salesian Animators and Helpers. This served as preparation for the work ahead of Boscofest, HDS, SLV and summer camps organized for the group of youngsters we work with.

Pasta Night


On Sunday 11th January, SPYS (Salesian Pastoral Youth Service) has followed on its Christmas tradition and organized the annual pasta night at Savio College in Dingli. Although this year a bit later than usual, the activity still managed to attract a very good number of youths most of whom are involved in voluntary work locally and abroad.
